Vehicles of the future hold the promise of unprecedented levels of safety, comfort and mobility for human beings. Delivering on this promise requires not only technology breakthroughs but also consideration of a broad range of societal perspectives. By connecting with social scientists, philosophers and lawyers, we seek to gain insight from other disciplines on what is valuable.

Our current areas of research focuses on human-centered mobility themes:

• Understanding how people will interact with increasingly automated vehicles

• Societal impacts of vehicle automation from policy to ethics to law

• Technology advances in sensing, decision-making and control

 

CARS-affiliated faculty are found in departments across Stanford’s School of Engineering with partners in Stanford Law School, Humanities and Science, School of Medicine and Graduate School of Business.
